A week after their wedding on July 10, a Racine couple, Taylor and Emma Forsyth, sailed off into the sunset, literally.
The couple met in Sea Scouts, the nautical version of Boy Scouts, and after their wedding, set off in a 26-foot sailboat across Lake Michigan, headed eventually for New York City through the Erie Canal, the Ludington News reported.
“We both started sailing probably about, I couldn’t even tell you. We were like 14 years old, so a while back,” Emma Forsyth told local television station 9 & 10 News.
They are in between jobs right now and their apartment lease expired so they figured it was time to make voyage.
Taylor, 29, is a boat designer. Emma just completed a one-year residency as a pharmacist.
They expected to arrive in New York City in October to start their new lives. Their voyage includes a 13-hour crossing of Lake Michigan, going beneath the Mackinac Bridge into Lake Huron and into Lake St. Clair, taking the Detroit River and the American side of Lake Erie to Buffalo, then using the boat’s motor to take the Eric Canal to New York City.
“It’s been an obsession to do this,” Taylor said. “I’ve just owned (the boat) for five years waiting for the right opportunity.”
