The Black History Youth Achievement Awards are set to take place on Saturday, February 22, at Memorial Hall in Racine from noon to 4 p.m. This annual event, now in its 39th year, celebrates the accomplishments of students nominated by school staff for their achievements in various categories.
Each year, both public and private school students are considered for these awards. The nominations fall into several categories: Academic Achievement, Athletic Ability, Excellence in the Arts, and Super Person.
In the Academic Achievement category, students are recognized for their performance in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies. The criteria include classroom performance, assessments, grades, improvement, and effort.
For Athletic Ability, nominees demonstrate excellence in athletic activities either sponsored by schools or outside of them. Achievements and sportsmanship are key considerations.
Excellence in the Arts acknowledges students who excel in any form of artistic expression. This includes those enrolled in formal art programs as well as those who engage with art independently.
The Super Person Award is given to students who exhibit outstanding character or growth. It also recognizes dedication to community service or other commendable actions not covered by the other categories.
