The omicron variant of COVID-19 is finally loosening its grip on the country, and Wisconsin is no exception.

The state Department of Health Services reported 2,491 new confirmed cases in Wisconsin on Jan. 30, according to a report on Fox11. That was the fewest number of new cases since Dec. 25. In conjunction with that, the seven-day average of new cases fell to 5,926, its lowest level since Dec. 30.

As the number of new cases has dropped off, so too has the positivity rate. The percentage of tests that have come back positive reached a high of 29.3% Jan. 10. It has since fallen below 20%, DHS numbers show.

Although most of the COVID-19 stats have gone down, hospitalizations increased slightly on Jan. 31. The Wisconsin Hospital Association told Fox11 that 1,579 coronavirus patients were in hospitals. That was an increase of 15 over Jan. 30’s numbers but down 351 from a week earlier, allowing the state to still report a downward trend in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The omicron variant’s high level of contagiousness had resulted in surging numbers across the country over the past couple of months. The variant first appeared in late November.

Wisconsin has reported more than 1.3 million COVID-19 cases and 12,453 deaths (confirmed and probable) since the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Those numbers were through Jan. 31.
