A Racine community is shaken after six individuals were shot while attending a vigil for a 20-year-old individual who was shot in the same area in 2020.
No one was killed in the incident but it does set up a dangerous precedent for the area, which has suffered an increase in crime from last year.
Marcus Caldwell, who the vigil was held for, was murdered in 2020 by Khalli Buckley, a 23-year-old, who was later charged with first-degree homicide.
"We heard one, and then it sounded like it was just a firecracker and I thought it was maybe one of the neighbors playing a joke. And then it turned out to be that like, 10 or so shots went out after that," William Confer, neighbor, told Fox 6 Now.
The incident took place near Yout and Carter. When police originally arrived, they were responding to complaints of a large and loud crowd, but gunshots were fired after they arrived at the scene. Fortunately, they were able to help the six victims who had been injured by gunshot wounds.
All of the victims of the shooting are expected to recover but the increase in violence is concerning for residents of the area.
As of Sept. 7, seven homicides have occurred in Racine this year, versus only two in 2020.
