The city of Racine has a new equity officer as Damien Evans has been hired to fill the role that the city has considered for several years.

Evans said he's looking forward to the job and the challenges he will tackle.

“It seemed like a great opportunity,” Evans said. "It was something that would provide unique challenges for me. Something I thought I could do really well."

Wisconsin News reported that Evans will work at cultivating a diverse workforce and culture by examining “equity in a way that is not a checkbox.”

Evans is crafting an equity task force plan that the city will utilize on best practices to adhere to its diversity, equality and inclusion objectives, according to Wisconsin News.

Evans told the news organization that he was asking department heads within the city to examine methods to “include those different voices around the table and pay less attention to a hierarchical system.”

The city’s objective is “that we are open and understanding about what defines people’s lifestyles and what impacts them as employees,” Evans said.
