The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Athletics football team is off to a successful start as the team celebrates winning its first game of the season.
The win on Sept. 5 marks the start of the team's 127th season and its first game since 2019, according to the Racine County Eye.
"About that time! Waited 21 months," UM Whitewater football coach Rim Shields posted on Twitter. "What’s a few more hours?"
Four local students are on the roster for the team this year, including Aaron Sturdevant of Burlington, Luke Nelson of Union Grove and Jaylon Edmonson and Tervell Jackson of Racine, according to the Racine County Eye.
The Whitewater Warhawks won their first game by 46-7 against the Carthage Firebirds, according to a post from the football team.
"Defensively, the Warhawks were led by Mackenzie Balanganayi who was credited with one sack and four tackles but was nearly unblockable and far more disruptive than those numbers suggested," the football team posted on its website.
The team plays their next game on Sept. 11.
"The Warhawks will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Salisbury, Maryland, for a Saturday game against Salisbury University, the 8th ranked team in the nation in the most recent d3football.com poll," the football team posted.
