A new grant program was just announced that provides business owners with $10,000 to leverage vacant business space in Downtown Racine.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation has announced their Main Street Bounce Back program, which would be eligible to new or existing businesses and nonprofits.

Journal Times reports that not only does offering spaces to new businesses encourage those businesses, but also all of the businesses on the street around them as the shopping areas are filled out.

"The idea is if they have an empty spot next door, or several empty spots on the street, it makes it really hard for folks to stop and walk up and down and visit their stores,” Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation said, the Journal Times reported. “So we want to have a really vibrant street that has tons of shops or cafes, and someone can stop and enjoy all the businesses that are on that street.”

There are 16 different spaces in downtown Racine that businesses have the opportunity to claim for their own, the Journal Times reported.

"We're working hard to make sure small businesses can keep bouncing back from this pandemic better than ever," Gov. Tony Evers (D-WI) said in an Aug. 13 tweet. "@WEDCNews' Wisconsin Tomorrow Main Street Bounce Back Grants program is key to helping our small businesses and our communities recover."
