RACINE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT: A Taste of the Trades

Housing9

Racine Unified School District recently issued the following announcement.

Some construction pathway students from the Academies of Racine-Case are getting a small taste of the trades thanks to a big project. Findorff Construction invited the students to the RUSD Aquatic Center job site the first week of June and there was plenty for them to see and do.

With more than 32,000 masonry blocks in the building, 51,000 square feet of metal roof deck and 2,300 yards of concrete the group of students was exposed to steel work, masonry, carpentry and more, but they really got a taste of things when they were able to physically help lay some blocks on the site just as real masons do.

In addition to the hands-on work and a tour of the job site, representatives from Findorff also provided insight on all the different careers available in the construction industry and how the students could start preparing themselves to get into the trades.

The students even got a look at the money they could earn in the trades. Most trade employees start as apprentices before becoming journeymen. Journeyman wages range from about $32.73/hour for laborers to $43.71 per hour for operators. Apprentices typically start at about 50% of those wages.

By the end of the students’ visit to the job site, a couple of them had decided that a construction site is where they want to be.
