A day care worker in Racine, Wisc., will likely face charges after a man stole her car with two children she had left unattended were inside.

According to a story on WITI-TV’s website, the day care provider stopped to pick up some property at a home in Milwaukee County, leaving two children, ages 8 and 2, inside. She turned off the car but left he keys in the ignition, and then a man got in and drove off with the two children still inside. Kendra Navarro, the mother of the 8-year-old, was shaken when she was later told the news.

“I feel like putting kids in day care is scary already, because we have to rely on other people to watch our kids,” she said. “It breaks that trust, for sure.”

The man pulled over the car a couple of blocks away and fled, leaving the children in the car, the story said. Navarro’s daughter then asked a neighbor to call 911. Glendale police said Feb. 28 that they had referred a charge of leaving a child unattended in a child care vehicle against the day care worker to the district attorney’s office. The woman could not be reached for comment, WITI’s story said. The man who stole the car is still at large, police said.
