The City of Racine is set to provide financial assistance to homeowners for sump pump installations, aiming to enhance basement protection and prevent the sanitary sewer system from being overwhelmed during storms. The initiative will grant up to $5,000 each to 100 homeowners this year.
Applications for these grants opened on September 3rd and can be submitted via the city website or in person at Racine City Hall. The grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to approved applicants.
Mayor Cory Mason stated, “We’re helping people protect their homes while also protecting the environment. Nobody wants rain to flood their basement, and we don’t want that water in city sewers where it will be needlessly treated and could overload the system. These sump pumps will help keep basements dry, and Lake Michigan clean.”
The program aims to replace foundation drains in older homes that direct stormwater into sanitary sewers with sump pumps that divert water away from home foundations onto lawns. This effort aligns with Racine’s Wastewater Utility's broader strategy to manage stormwater flow more effectively and reduce unnecessary treatment costs.
By 2031, the utility plans to have installed 2,000 sump pumps across Racine as part of its long-term objectives. To qualify for the grant, homes must have a foundation drain connected to the city sewer without major code violations or outstanding taxes.
Once approved by the city, homeowners can select a licensed contractor for installation. The city covers up to $5,000 of installation costs post-inspection; any additional expenses are borne by the homeowner.
