Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers views taking a stand in support of President Joe Biden’s signing of the Respect for Marriage Act as being the only sensible thing to do.
“Our kids deserve to grow up in a world where they're free to be who they are and marry who they love,” Evers tweeted not long after Biden officially signed off on the legislation widely seen as a greater step toward equality for same-sex and interracial couples as law of the land with his signature.
In adding his signature, Biden’s move essentially erases the more than two-decade old Defense of Marriage Act that only defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman and allowed states to refuse to recognize same sex marriages performed in other states.
In addition, the move further cements the President’s change of heart on the issue, with CNN reporting that as a senator he voted in favor of the legislation before going public with his change in position on same-sex unions more than ten years ago.
With Respect for Marriage now officially stamped as a federal law, unions between same-sex and mixed-race couples are deemed legal across the country, meaning states, though still not required to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, will be required to recognize unions performed in other states.
Back on Dec. 13, as part of an event celebrating the bill becoming law, Biden was front and center at a White House event attended by Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, with FOX News reporting the celebration was all lit up in the colors of the rainbow, the symbol that members of the LGBTQA+ community use to represent equality.
