In a battle between Racine County’s two only ranked girls’ soccer teams, Union Grove knocked off the Prairie Hawks 2-0 in a nonconference showdown at Wind Point May 23.

Ranked No. 9 in Division 2 in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association, the Broncos (15-2-1) got goals from Julia James and Lexi Pettit to secure the win over Prairie (8-5-2), ranked No. 6 in Division 4 play, according to a Journal Times report.

“I feel like they dominated us in terms of possession,” Prairie coach Joe Manley said. “They’re a team that’s really set to hit you on the counter and we played right into their hands that way.”

The win was the 11th straight for Union Grove and capped their 12th shutout of the season.

For the Hawks, the loss snapped a two-game winning streak and marked the fifth time they have fallen short against a ranked opponent this season, with all the teams being in higher divisions than them, the Journal Times reported.

“We just couldn’t get off the mark today,” Manley said.

Goalie Maggie Dreifuerst finished with four saves for the Hawks.

Both teams closed out their seasons May 25, according to the Journal Times.

Union Grove’s final game came against Southeast Conference leader Kenosha Bradford/Reuther while Prairie finished their season with a game against Metro Classic Conference foe Racine Lutheran.
