Citizens who are in need of food and shelter can now apply for funds as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded Racine County over $280,000 to assist families.
A special board looks over the applications of nonprofit organizations in the area and distributes funding to those who qualify, the Racine County Eye reported.
“We have received funding for emergency food and shelter for many years," Jonathan Delagrave, director of Racine County Human Services, said, the Eye reported. "These funds assist families and individuals who need to fulfill basic needs for themselves and their families and did not have the resources at the time or had faced an unexpected crisis.”
The funding is intended to aid in emergency situations. These funds are being awarded by FEMA and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFS), who have been active in the area since 1983. In addition to being a nonprofit, eligibility requirements for the funding include having an accounting system, carrying out an annual audit, having non-discriminatory policies, possessing the ability to deliver food, being comprised of volunteers and not being banned from federal funds.
The deadline to apply for the funds is 4:30 p.m. on March 11. There will be no exceptions or flexibility to this deadline.
