Waterford Union High School Sophomore Trevor Buchanan was recently named the All-County Boys Runner of the Year.
Buchanan was the unanimous choice for the 10-person county vote as his time was 39 seconds faster than any other runner's last fall, according to The Journal Times.
The All-County runner was the only individual to break sub-17 minutes and improved his best time from last season by almost a minute with a personal best time of 16:47.3, according to The Journal Times.
“The day of sectionals, we had near perfect weather and I knew that was my chance to break 17 minutes in the 5K,” Buchanan said, according to The Journal Times. “I met my season goal.”
Buchanan was inspired by his father to put on his running shoes. Growing up, he often heard stories of his father running which encouraged him to join a running club prior to high school.
“I have always been into running and competition,” Buchanan said, according to The Journal Times. “I joined a running club before high school and I was invited to run with the high school guys. My freshman year I lettered in varsity and would like to keep getting better."
Waterford Coach James Hanke told The Journal Times that Buchanan's effort is one of the best he's had the pleasure coaching.
“His drive is as good as I have coached in my 15-plus years of cross-country coaching,” Hanke said, per The Journal Times.
Buchanan sets sight on Aaron Derner's 2010 Waterford school record of 15:52.8.
“I plan to break (Derner’s) record my senior year,” Buchanan said, according to The Journal Times. “I will train hard and go fast. I hope I can inspire others that working hard toward your goals pays off.”
