A September jobs report from CNBC shows approximately 194,000 jobs were added that month, though consensus estimates by Dow Jones had been around 500,000.
“Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden’s policies are failing the American people. We need less, not more government,” Rep. Bryan Steil tweeted Oct. 8, responding to a tweet by CNBC about the jobs creation shortfall.
The numbers, coming out of the Labor Department, show the U.S. economy created jobs at a much slower pace than expected. CNBC states that the total was held back by a significant drop in government jobs. According to the report, during the same month, the unemployment rate fell to 4.8%—the lowest it has been since February 2020.
As more children resume in-person learning, it is predicted that more adults will re-enter the workforce, Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) reports. During mid-summer of 2021, there were almost 8 million Americans not working because they needed to stay home with their children. Since then, that number has decreased to about 5 million.
The sector that added the most jobs this past month was leisure and hospitality, which added 74,000. Professional and business services added 60,000 jobs, retail added 56,000 and government jobs decreased by 123,000, CNBC states.
