A federal agent attempting to serve an arrest warrant in Racine was shot recently and is in stable condition, police said.
The suspect shot himself and died, according to police.
"On Oct. 6, members of the Racine Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit assisted with a U.S. Marshal task force operation at 3722 Clairmont Street within the City of Racine," the police department said on Facebook. "Members of this federal task force were at this location to serve an arrest warrant on an individual wanted for charges including aggravated assault and weapons violations."
Shots were fired from inside the house as officers attempted to make contact at the door, and the federal agent was hit.
"At that time the officers pulled back and there was no return fire from law enforcement personnel," Racine police said.
Several children and adults left the house and officers then began negotiating with the suspect.
"Following negotiations, law enforcement personnel did make entry to 3722 Clairmont St. and discovered the male suspect deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound," police said.
During the incident, Racine police advised residents in the vicinity to stay in their homes, Fox6 Now reported. Shortly after 3 p.m., police sent out an "all clear" to the neighborhood.
"It was just a crazy, chaotic scene," Joshua Allen, who lives near the scene, told the station. "Usually when we get an alert like that somebody’s kid is missing or something like that. It was a horrible feeling. We didn’t know what to expect."
