Mental Illness Awareness Week has begun and Racine Mayor Cory Mason participated in the kickoff event with NAMI Racine County.
Mason wrote on his Facebook page that he was happy to participate in such a worthy cause.
“Happy to be out on Monument Square yesterday with NAMI Racine County for the start of Mental Illness Awareness Week. Together we can #endthestigma,” he wrote.
Mental Illness Awareness Week is took place Oct. 3-9 with the event dating back to 1990 when Congress established the first week of October to raise awareness of mental illness.
Other events of note are: Oct. 5 as National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, Oct. 7 as National Depression Screening Day, Oct. 9 as National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Walks United Day of Hope, and Oct. 10 is World Mental Health Day.
“The Racine County chapter of NAMI is holding several events this week, including an online auction and a fundraiser through Noodles & Co,” NAMI Racine stated.
The suicide rate in the state is above the national average and in 2017 there were 15.3 suicides in Wisconsin for every 100,000 people, while nationally there were 14 suicides for every 100,000 people.
