A Racine man is being charged with driving while intoxicated, hitting a police officer’s car, injuring the officer and fleeing the scene on Sept. 18 following a hit-and-run.
Twenty-five-year-old Jahleel Spencer was driving a truck when he struck a police officer’s car near 16th Street and Memorial Drive. Despite the collision, Spencer continued to drive until he was stopped on 13th Street. He was then asked to take a breathalyzer test, with a result of .257, more than three times the legal limit, according to FOX6.
“In Wisconsin, about every three hours somebody is injured or killed in an alcohol-related crash," said a report from Grieve Law.
The officer that was involved in the crash was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and rib pain, according to FOX6.
Spencer made a court appearance on Monday, Sept. 20 for his arraignment, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 7 where all four charges will be addressed, according to JT Irregulars.
In 2018, Wisconsin was responsible for a total of 23,449 DUI arrests, the ninth-most out of all states in the U.S. In 2019, the state of Wisconsin made 6,326 second offense OWI arrests, 117 of which were all within Racine County, according to Grieve Law.
