In Racine, prayer vigils are being held to honor and remember those who were lost to gun violence.
"This has been a very difficult time for our city and the pain caused by the loss of life is tremendous," Mayor Cory Mason said in a Facebook post.
Multiple rallies and vigils have been held recently in Racine in response to rising levels of gun violence, according to an event flyer for a recent vigil.
One of the vigils held on Sept. 9 was called "Stop the Violence." It was held at the Tyler-Domer Community Parking Lot and featured faith and community leaders as guest speakers.
"I want to express my solidarity for all of those who yearn for a safe place to live, who seek nonviolent solutions to conflict and for those who want to see an end to children using guns to address their frustrations," Mason said. "My heart breaks for anyone that is impacted from the loss of someone to gun violence."
Recently a high schooler was shot walking home from a football game in Racine, according to a Fox 6 news article.
The overall levels of gun crime and homicides have risen in the past year, with significant growth since mid-August 2021, according to CBS 58.
