CHILDREN'S WISCONSIN: 4 months old, Brecken

Health tax

Children's Wisconsin issued the following announcement on May 26.

At just 4 months old, Brecken has faced more hurdles than some people do in their lifetime. Even before Brecken was born, he had been diagnosed with several rare and complex conditions, including total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR), double outlet right ventricle (DORV), and heterotaxy syndrome, where organs are misplaced within the body.

Brecken’s parents, Brittany and Blake, braced themselves for the medical complexities their son would encounter after being born, with two of his surgeries happening immediately after birth. Each of Brecken’s surgeries have been performed by Dr. Michael Mitchell, a pediatric heart surgeon in the Herma Heart Institute at Children’s Wisconsin. Mom says Dr. Mitchell has a “special place in their hearts” for what he has done for Brecken.

Brecken’s parents had hoped he would be able to head home this week, but his heart isn’t strong enough to leave his room in the cardiac intensive care unit. While disappointing, Brecken’s parents know he’s in good hands, even if he’s showing his own frustration in his “judgey face” (which is well known by his care team). Mom explained, “Children’s Wisconsin is like a second home to us. They treat us like family and everyone works together as a team for the best interest of our son.”
