Edwin Henry Killian died on July 18, 1928, at age 51. He was born in Racine, Wisconsin, in 1876. Early in life, Killian worked at a planing mill in Racine and played independent baseball there. He started his professional baseball career in 1902 with the Rockford Red Sox. In 1903, he debuted in Major League Baseball with the Cleveland Naps. In 1904, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers, where he spent most of his career. Killian was a left-handed pitcher known for his strong control and low earned run average. He helped the Tigers win American League pennants in 1907, 1908, and 1909. Killian held a major league record by pitching 1,001 innings without allowing a home run. After leaving the major leagues, he played minor league baseball with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Following his baseball career, Killian worked in an automobile factory in Detroit. He died after a cancer battle. Killian’s roots in Racine were important in his development as a player. His work and play in Racine laid the foundation for a notable career in professional baseball.
