After a cemetery shooting in the area that left at least two people injured, Racine Mayor Cory Mason wasted little time in issuing a juvenile curfew ordinance through the weekend of June 5.

The mayor’s dictum mandated that anyone under the age of 18 be home by 11 p.m.

Mason also made it a point to extend his condolences to the family that was affected by the gravesite gunfire.

“Today’s heinous shooting at a cemetery while a family was already mourning the loss of a loved one is a new low for these perpetrators of violence in our community,” he told WFRV recently. “The violence has got to stop! Revenge is not the answer. Ending gun violence is the top priority of the police department and my administration.”

Mason added that he has spoken with both Gov. Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul about committing more resources to support violence prevention across the state.

“We have an epidemic of gun violence, and we must be united and resolved in fighting it,” Kaul said in a Twitter post, quoted by WFRV. “As soon as possible, we need to increase funding for law enforcement and others working to make our communities safe. We need to crack down on crimes committed with guns, and we need to keep guns out of the hands of felons and others who’ve been shown to be dangerous.”
