The Mount Pleasant Police Department (MPPD) charged a 19-year-old man with the attempted murder of a Case High School football player.
Zysean Golden, 16, was found in the parking lot of the Delta Hotel on Sept. 28, suffering from a gunshot wound to the right side, according to WISN. The parking lot is located across the street from the school.
Authorities said Tyrese Love, 19, fled the scene of the shooting on a bicycle, WISN reported. MPPD officers arrested Love in Chicago approximately 48 hours after the shooting. MPPD was assisted by an FBI Violent Gang Task Force, the U.S. Marshals Service, and Chicago police. Love was held in the Cook County Jail, awaiting extradition to Racine for attempted homicide charges.
Golden’s mother told WISN that he underwent surgery at Froedtert Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. His recovery is expected to take at least six weeks, according to TMJ4.
The daytime shooting sent shockwaves across the community, TMJ4 reported. School officials initiated a lockdown and added extra law enforcement officers for several days.
“It’s a very scary situation, very scary thing,” Jody Hrabel, mother of a Case High School student, told WISN. “Wanting to go to the school, but then we get a call from the school like, ‘Don’t come; can’t pick up your students. They’re on lockdown.’ Not much you can do at that point. You can’t go near the school. You can’t pick up your child. So, it is very scary because you think, ‘What’s going to happen next?'”
Frankie Purnell, a volunteer assistant football coach at the school, said Golden seems intimidating due to his size but is a “gentle giant,” according to TMJ4.
“He’s one of those kids who all the teammates seem to love him,” Purnell said. “All the kids seem to love him. He has a big heart.”
