Racine Mayor Cory Mason was recently on hand for the official reopening of the West 6th Street Bridge.

“West 6th Street Bridge to officially reopen,” Mason said in a video posted to Facebook from the Nov. 2 ribbon-cutting ceremony. Originally built nearly a century ago in 1928, the bridge spans Root River and Horlick Drive, with its arch recognized as a historical and notable landmark across the city.

According to RacineCountyEye.com, with the original bridge being demolished in December of 2021, motorists were forced to seek out alternate routes in and out of the city. More recently, city officials hired Ayers to rebuild the bridge, directing them to honor the aesthetics of the original bridge through the process.

Representatives from the Racine Heritage Museum note that builders took special steps to make sure the history of the old bridge that has stood as the gateway to the city for almost the last century was honored in erecting the new pathway.

With the project now complete, residents are expected to find it much easier to access the downtown area.
