Norman Huber “Norm” Nelson was born on January 30, 1923, in Racine, Wisconsin. Raised in the city, he developed an early passion for racing, starting his career in the 1930s when he raced on the streets of Racine. By the 1940s, he had moved to midget and stock car racing, finding success in both. Nelson became well known for his work in AAA and USAC Stock Car racing. He won multiple championships in the 1960s and achieved 35 USAC victories, many of which came at the Milwaukee Mile. He also made several starts in NASCAR and won one race in 1955. Nelson was known for his strategic driving and was nicknamed “The Great Dane” due to his tall stature. After retiring from driving in 1976, he became a car owner and continued to be involved in racing. Nelson also owned Nelson Enterprises, a snowmobile shop in Racine, where he and his family worked. He passed away on November 8, 1988, but remains a respected figure in the local racing community.
